Abstract:
Paying engineers an hourly rate has been the norm in the Aerospace industry since its
inception. Since then, changes in Social, Technological, Economic, and Political environments
have left engineers expecting something more. Global competition has forced managers to seek
low cost engineering options. However, not all engineering can or should be sent offshore.
Change is needed, but both parties are leery of it. The article introduces a new concept termed
“Microinsourcing” as a possible solution to meet the needs of companies and their engineers.
The article can be applied directly to many industries which utilise knowledge workers and
indirectly to other types of workers.
