This guide is for women who have decided to have an abortion. If you are pregnant and are undecided about following through with the pregnancy, it is a good idea to speak to someone to help you decide, however the ultimate decision is yours to make. Choose who you speak with carefully as many pregnancy counselling services will never refer you for an abortion and will pressure you into allowing your unborn child to live, regardless of your situation.



Steps
1Make sure that you go somewhere where it is legal and safe. When it was illegal to prematurely end the life of a human fetus, dangerous "back-alley" and coat-hanger abortions were the only option.

2Understand that any female who gets pregnant can now legally end the life growing inside them in a procedure called "abortion", which means "to cause to end at a prematurestage". In the case of teens and pre-teens, there may be notification restrictions. Your clinic can help guide you through the steps.
3Get an abortion early in the pregnancy. It is alwase easier to abort earlier than it is later because once a fetus outside the womb, it is illegal to terminate its life.
Get the "morning after" pill. It is a safe and effective abortion method that prevents a fertilised egg from implanting, provided they are used within 5 days of intercourse. They are more effective the sooner you take them after sex.
Prescription-only medication abortions are available up to 9 weeks into pregnancy. Some women find this method preferable because they can choose the time of their abortion and be in the comfort and privacy of their home. Others are uncomfortable in a clinic setting. However, some women experience more painful cramping than they might during a surgical abortion. Educate yourself on the different methods to decide which is right for you.
For early abortions (14 weeks/3 months), costs are $200-$700. For later abortions, costs rise, up to several thousand dollars for a very late abortion. Abortion clinics will generally need to be paid when making the appointment or on the day of the operation.

7Find out if you should expect protesters outside the building. If there is a problem, the clinic may either have its own clinical escorts, or be able to refer you to one. Clinical escorts can get you into the building without you being bothered by protesters.
8Make an appointment.
9Come into the clinic for your appointment. There is a chance that you will be harassed by people outside the clinic property, but they cannot legally keep you from entering the clinic.
10Behave as you would when having other elective surgeries performed - tell the secretary who you are, and you will eventually be called into the Doctor's office for your abortion.
